VAT questions, answered
What is the VAT rate in Namibia?
The standard rate is 15%. Exports and certain essential goods are zero-rated (0%), and some supplies — such as most financial services and residential rent — are exempt.
How do I remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price?
Divide the inclusive amount by 1.15. For example, N$1,150 inclusive ÷ 1.15 = N$1,000 exclusive, so the VAT portion is N$150. Subtracting 15% from the inclusive amount is a common mistake and gives the wrong answer.
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the exclusive amount by 1.15 (or add 15% of it). N$1,000 exclusive × 1.15 = N$1,150 inclusive.
When must my business charge VAT?
Once your business is VAT-registered with NamRA — mandatory when taxable supplies exceed N$1,000,000 in any 12-month period. Unregistered businesses may not charge VAT.
